As part of the We Care Civic Engagement Internship at NMIMS Mumbai, Dr. Pritam Kumar Das (BDS, Manipal | MBA, NMIMS Mumbai) made a significant contribution under the leadership of Dr. Mala Ghosh Moitra, KCSSR’s President.

From February 5th to 12th 2025, Dr. Das spearheaded high-impact educational sessions at Kalinagar Boys’ High School, focusing on preventive healthcare, self-care strategies, and business education. He simplified dental, physical, and mental health concepts, equipping students with lifelong wellness habits. Dr. Das demonstrated strong managerial competencies, including strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, effective communication, leadership development, and mentoring. His ability to simplify complex subjects, foster interactive discussions, and inspire critical thinking encouraged students to take charge of their future. The overwhelming enthusiasm and curiosity displayed by participants highlighted the success and impact of this initiative.

Advancing Public Health: KCSSR’s Sustainable Healthcare Intervention in Nagendranagar 4th Lane

KCSSR remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainable community health development, addressing critical public health challenges through targeted interventions and long-term impact strategies. Under the distinguished leadership of Dr. Pritam Kumar Das (As a part of SVKM’s NMIMS Mumbai’s We Care Internship), and the esteemed supervision of Dr. Mala Ghosh Moitra, this initiative sought to enhance sanitation practices, promote hygiene awareness, and advance oral healthcare solutions within the vulnerable community of Nagendranagar 4th Lane.

A total of 50 individuals underwent comprehensive health screenings, revealing a prevalence of tobacco-induced oral lesions, including cases of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), a pre-cancerous condition. Additionally, inadequate waste disposal systems and poor sanitation infrastructure were identified as significant contributors to disease transmission and environmental hazards. This intervention was meticulously aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 3 (Good Health), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), integrating public health dentistry, epidemiological assessments, and sustainability-driven behavioral frameworks.

To address these systemic concerns, KCSSR implemented a structured waste management awareness initiative, fostering community-led sanitation reforms and responsible waste disposal practices. A comprehensive dental health camp was organized, providing preventive screenings, oral hygiene education, and targeted tobacco cessation counseling. The initiative further incorporated epidemiological assessments, enabling quantitative analysis of disease risk factors and the formulation of scalable public health strategies. Moreover, a Tobacco-Free Lives Initiative was introduced, offering personalized cessation interventions, behavioral support mechanisms, and medical referrals for high-risk individuals.

In pursuit of sustainable public health transformation, KCSSR advocates for the expansion of hygiene education programs through community-driven awareness initiatives. Furthermore, efforts will be directed toward enhancing access to low-cost dental healthcare services by establishing corporate-sponsored mobile clinics. To ensure data-driven policymaking, the organization seeks to strengthen epidemiology-based frameworks that facilitate evidence-based healthcare interventions. Additionally, the implementation of sustainable tobacco de-addiction programs, fostered through public-private collaborations, remains a critical priority.

This initiative exemplifies KCSSR’s unwavering dedication to systemic health reform, fostering collaborative partnerships, community empowerment, and policy-oriented solutions. Through strategic intervention and sustained investment, we aim to cultivate healthier, more resilient communities, ensuring equitable healthcare access for all.

Transforming Public Health & Education: A Sustainable Initiative at Suitya Colony G.S.F.P. Vidyalaya

Feb 2025: At Suitya Colony G.S.F.P. Vidyalaya, Chapra, KCSSR (Krishnagar Centre for Social Studies and Research) implemented a sustainable public health and education initiative under the SVKM’s NMIMS We Care Social Engagement Internship, led by Dr. Pritam Kumar Das (BDS, Manipal | MBA, NMIMS Mumbai) and supervised by Dr. Mala Ghosh Moitra (President, KCSSR). The intervention focused on improving oral hygiene, hygiene literacy, nutrition, and learning outcomes through scientific methodologies and community-led action. A DMFT (Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth) assessment of 160 students revealed that 27% had early-stage cavities, with a high prevalence of non-fluoridated toothpaste usage. Supervised brushing sessions increased proper brushing techniques from 3% to 80%, reducing long-term oral health risks. The midday meal program analysis found severe iron and protein deficiencies, with heavy reliance on rice-based diets lacking nutritional diversity. To address this, teacher-led vegetable gardens were introduced, and take-home meal rations were proposed to combat household food insecurity. 97% of students lacked proper handwashing techniques, which was mitigated by implementing the WHO-recommended six-step method as part of daily school routines. Parental awareness workshops improved knowledge on preventive healthcare and hygiene literacy, reinforcing behavior change beyond school. Faculty shortages were addressed through peer-assisted learning models and structured post-meal activities to reduce dropout rates. Advocacy for government teacher recruitment and community volunteer education networks was initiated to strengthen learning retention. The program demonstrated how data-driven, community-empowered models can transform rural public health and education, setting a precedent for scalable, sustainable interventions.
